ARRL National Convention &
Pacific Division Convention

Welcome Scouts, Scout Leaders and Amateur Radio Operators

Come and have fun with amateur radio and Scouting. This is a Scouting event, so come in your Scout uniform.

THE FOLLOWING IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE, SO CHECK BACK FOR NEW INFORMATION AND CHANGES AS WE GET CLOSER TO THE TIME OF THE CONVENTION.

Scouts age 17 and younger will receive free admission to the HamCon/Pacificon 2012 Amateur Radio Convention at the Santa Clara Marriot hotel. There are additional fees for parking, purchasing kits and license examinations. Antenna Forums, Breakfast and Banquet Tickets may be purchased separately at listed prices. Most Scouting and Youth activities are expected to be scheduled Saturday 8am - 5pm and Sunday 9am - noon at Youth Area in the Exhibit Hall (open Sat. 9am-noon, 1-7pm; Sun 9am-1pm).

Come hear "The Sounds of Amateur Radio" At Pacificon 2012 you will have a chance to hear the sounds of amateur radio in action. Ham radio operators will be using state-of-the-art HF base station radios to transmit live on different frequency bands, making contact with other hams in the nation and around the world. Children and adults who are not yet licensed hams will have an opportunity to use the radios under the direction of licensed hams.

The Scouting Program at the convention is intergrated with the convention Youth Program.

The Scouting program at ARRL HamCon/Pacificon 2012 includes the following. Unless otherwise indicated programs are for both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.

Kit Building and Learning to Solder

Purchase and bulid a radio or electronic kit project. Learn to solder with a soldering iron. More ...

Activities for Younger Scouts (Cubs and Brownies)

For younger aged Scouts we are planning to have Morse code bracelet and QSL card making activities that they can do at the Youth Area in the Exhibit Hall. More ...

Youth Transmitter Hunt (T-Hunt)

A transmiter hunt for youth is planned to take place sometime on Saturday afternoon. More ...

Boy Scouts Merit Badge Completion.

Communicating via Amateur Radio can be used by Boy Scouts to complete or partial complete at least 2 Radio merit badge requirements (7 & 9.a.2) and perhaps more. Requirement 7 requires prior approval of the Scout's Merit Badge Councilor.

The Youth Kit Building (purchase and build) Activity can be used to complete or partial complete at least one Electronics merit badge requirement (4).

QSO International Space Station

ARISS logo

We are planning to contact the International Space Station and have 10 youth talk to an astronaut on the space station about noon-time on Saturday. Questions must be submitted in advance of convention to scouting@pacificon.org

Youth Forums

Older Scouts are encouraged to participate in the Youth Forums. All youth and adults attending Youth Forums must be registered and have a convention badge to attend forums. (Youth 17 years old and younger are free.)

Boy Scout Radio and Electronics Merit Badge Councilors Needed at Convention

We need Scouts and Scouters to man a Ham Radio and Scouting information booth, merit badge councilors available to test and sign off on Radio and Electronics merit badge requirements, Scouters to play with Scouts and perhaps even Scouts to greet other youth in Youth and Scouting Program activity areas at the convention. Please contact the Scouting Program Coordinator (see below) if you can help.

Amateur Radio Operators Needed

Amateur radio operators are needed to be Boy Scout Radio Merit Badge Counselors and counselors for other techinical merit badges.

Amateur radio operators and stations are needed to promote and support the Girl Scout world-wide Thinking Day on the Air event in February.
